A Steel column is a nominally vertical element bearing axial loads, whose primary function is to resist compression stresses. Sometimes they are also connected to beams to resist bending and provide lateral stability against wind and seismic loads.
HSS, pipe and “I” shaped sections are the most efficient sections to use as columns since they have good resistance against buckling, and therefore, can carry all the loads from the superstructure to the foundations.
